”Yalda or Shab-e Chelleh (‘night of forty’) is an Iranian festival celebrated on the “longest and darkest night of the year,” i.e. the night of the Northern Hemisphere’s winter solstice. Every year, on December 21st, Iranians celebrate the arrival of winter, the renewal of the sun and the victory of light over darkness on Yalda Night.”
Families get together (in the house of the eldest) and stay awake all night long, Food plays a central role of course, specially watermelon, pomegranate, pistachios, and dried fruit, which are placed on a korsi, a covered table with a heat source that everyone sits around. Custom dictates that as much as forty varieties of food should be served. After dinner the elders entertain by reciting poetry from the Dīvān of Hafez (fāl-e Hafez), singing, and storytelling.
Yalda’s history is of Mithraism, whose believers celebrated this night as the night of the birth of Mithra, the Persian angel of light and truth.
